From 1977 through 1996 he was the principal of Murtha, Gainza & Associates, Inc. a Financial Consulting firm that operated through contracts with the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, between 1977 and 1996. He assisted companies in obtaining government contracts, loans through the U.S. Small Business Administration and counseled businesses in areas of taxation and finance. With offices in Manhattan and Queens, Mr. Murtha worked with every type of business entity. In addition to obtaining contracts and capital; he and his staff performed budget analysis, tax planning, business planning and certification for women and minority owned businesses (WMBE Certification). The services also involved working closely with federal, state and local government leaders in an effort to further the interests of business and Not-for-Profit Corporations. This work also involved the preparation of reports used by congressional committees covering business trends and developments in the private sector. This consulting firm operated concurrently with his Law Practice beginning in 1984.
Although his background is in Finance and Business Administration, Kevin Murtha has handled cases in numerous areas of the law.
When he started practicing in 1984, he handled matrimonial matters involving businesses as marital property. Through his background in business and finance he also handled tax cases which later developed into white collar criminal defense work.
Mr. Murtha began to focus his practice areas on issues facing business owners and public service organizations. After representing clients in cases involving estate probate matters, federal and state income tax cases and complex commercial transactions, Mr. Murtha began to develop an active Estate Planning practice. In the late 1990’s this area of the practice grew and it remains a primary practice area, as well as all other areas of law encountered by business owners. This includes real property, commercial agreements, taxation and complex litigation.
In addition to his Practice of Law, Kevin Murtha has taught at the undergraduate level, for the New York City University System in Business 1978 and law from 1987 through 1991 and at the graduate level starting in 1998.
He has held the position of Adjunct Professor of Law at Touro College/Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center. His curriculums have included Civil Externship, Business Organizations,
Not for Profit Law and related Clinic Programs.
